Game 1 February 10 2004 1-0
The opening led to an attack by White. An elegant counteraction simplified the position. Baramidze had a slightly better rook ending. Errors made by Stellwagen ended the game. Both players used Fritz8 and the Megadatabase2004.
Game 2 February 11 2004 1-0
The Sicilian Defence started less active than in the previous game. When White occupied the centre with his pieces, an attack on the kingside threatened. Black managed to reach the endgame by the exchange of pieces, but the restraint of his position continued due to a dominating White knight in the centre. Suddenly White offered the exchange of his strong knight and Black resigned immediately due to forced loss in the pawn ending. Stellwagen had equalised the match.
Game 3 February 12 2004 ½-½
The tension became high after a long theoretical variation of the Sicilian Defence. Baramidze threatened nasty sacrifices on the kingside. Stellwagen found the best defence after a long thought. White did sacrifice a rook but it led to perpetual check.
Game 4 February 13 2004 1-0
White wins the queen ending. Baramidze played a timid game. A quick draw was expected after the opening, but David gave the initiative to his opponent. Stellwagen won after great complications.
